Sora shut down: the best Sora alternative for image & text to video

Looking for a Sora alternative? OpenAI closed the Sora apps on April 26, 2026 and the Sora API on September 24, 2026, so Sora can no longer make videos — here or anywhere. The closest Sora alternative we actually run is Kling 3.0, for cinematic text and image to video with native sound; Veo 3.1 is the Sora alternative for short dialogue-led clips, with Wan 2.5 for cheap drafts, Kling 2.5 Turbo for the cheapest Kling first takes and Grok Imagine for low-cost clips with sound; Seedance 2.5 is coming soon here. Below: what replaces each Sora feature, a converter to bring your Sora prompts over to a Sora alternative, and what it costs.

Is Sora shutting down? It already has

Two dates

According to OpenAI’s help center, the web and mobile apps of the Sora AI video generator stopped on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API followed on September 24, 2026. New generations are no longer possible on either, on any plan.

Your old videos

OpenAI pointed users to an export page to download their creations, and says data is permanently deleted after the discontinuation. If you still have access, export first — nothing here can recover Sora files.

Leftover credits

OpenAI’s notice says remaining Sora credits can be applied to Codex. They don’t transfer to any Sora alternative, including PictureToVideo.

Why you need a Sora alternative

No website can generate Sora videos any more. If a service still advertises Sora generation after September 24, 2026, ask which model it really runs. PictureToVideo doesn’t offer Sora — every Sora alternative on this page is a model we actually call, and the model behind each quality tier is listed on our models page.

Sora’s image to video turned one still into a moving shot. Each Sora alternative below does the same here from an uploaded photo — prices are what you pay PictureToVideo per second for image to video, without audio where it is optional (Veo always includes sound), checked Oct 5, 2026.

05Prompt converter

Bring your Sora prompts to a Sora alternative

Paste any prompt you wrote for Sora. The converter splits it into timed shots for Kling 3.0, the closest Sora alternative, moves sound cues to an audio line, keeps dialogue in quotes, normalises camera language and flags anything that won’t transfer. Fixed rules, no AI call — the same input always gives the same output.

What changed

  • Split into 3 timed shots (4s + 4s + 4s).
  • No aspect ratio found — using 16:9.
  • Moved 1 sound cue to the Audio line — Kling reads sound best at the end.

07Migration checklist

Move to a Sora alternative in three steps

Most people are up and running on a Sora alternative in an afternoon. The order matters: rescue your files first, then your prompts, then re-render only what you still need.
Step 1

Rescue what you can

Download any Sora videos you still have access to through OpenAI’s export page, and copy your favourite prompts into a document before anything else.

Step 2

Convert your prompts

Run each prompt through the converter above. Check the “What changed” notes — especially trimmed lengths and cameo mentions — and edit before you render.

Step 3

Draft cheap, finish sharp

Test ideas on Kling 2.5 Turbo (6 credits per second) or Wan 2.5 at 720p (9), then re-render keepers on Kling 3.0 (10) or Veo 3.1. The $2.99 starter pack covers about 6 such Turbo drafts.

08Prompt differences

Prompting a Sora alternative like a director

Name the shot size

Kling and Veo respond well to film vocabulary: wide, medium, close-up, over-the-shoulder. Start each shot with one so framing never has to be guessed.

One camera move per shot

Sora prompts often stacked several moves in one sentence. Give each shot a single move — push-in, orbit, crane up — and split the rest into new shots.

Put sound last

Keep the action lines visual and list sound on its own line at the end. Dialogue goes in quotes, with who says it, so native audio voices the right character.

Respect the clip length

Kling 3.0 takes up to 15 seconds and Veo 3.1 up to 8. Three or four shots of three to five seconds read best; if a scene needs more, render two clips and join them with Extend rather than cramming.

09What it costs

What each Sora alternative costs per second

Credits are charged per generated second and refunded automatically if a render fails. These are the Sora alternative models most former Sora users start with.

10Ground rules

How we write about Sora

  • Facts only, with OpenAI’s own help-center notice as the source for every date.
  • No OpenAI logos or Sora screenshots — we use the names only to describe each Sora AI alternative.
  • We never host, mirror or “unlock” Sora; there is no Sora on PictureToVideo, and no clip here is presented as a Sora render.
  • We only call a model a Sora alternative that “runs here” if we actually call it: Kling, Veo 3.1, Wan 2.5, Hailuo 02 and Grok Imagine. Seedance 2.5 says “coming soon” until it is switched on.
  • The images on this page are illustrations, not renders from any of the models compared.
  • Never convert prompts that depict real people without their consent — cameo-style prompts need a reference you have the right to use.
FAQ

Sora alternative FAQ

Still curious? Email support@picturetovideo.org — a human replies within a day.

01Is Sora shutting down?
It already has. According to OpenAI’s help center, the Sora web and mobile apps were discontinued on April 26, 2026 and the Sora API on September 24, 2026. New videos can no longer be generated, and OpenAI says stored data is permanently deleted after the discontinuation, so export anything you still can before you move to a Sora alternative.
02What is the best Sora alternative?
For cinematic text and image to video with native sound, Kling 3.0 is the closest overall Sora alternative: 3–15 second takes, up to 4K, multi-shot prompts and optional audio. Veo 3.1 is the pick for short, sound-first clips. Both run on PictureToVideo, so we earn either way — our best AI video generator guide compares every option, including ones we don’t sell.
03Is there a free Sora alternative?
Not here: PictureToVideo has no free tier, and the $2.99 starter pack is the cheapest way in. Kling’s own app hands out free daily credits for watermarked 720p clips. No Sora alternative offers unlimited free generation at this quality — video compute is expensive for everyone.
04What is the best Sora 2 alternative for image to video?
Upload the picture to Kling 3.0 if you want the Sora alternative with the most control — it also takes an end frame, so you decide where the shot lands. Veo 3.1 suits short clips with sound, Wan 2.5 square tests at 720p, and Kling 2.5 Turbo is the cheapest first take. All four take your photo as the first frame on our photo to video page.
05Kling vs Sora: which is better?
Today the question answers itself: Sora can no longer generate video and Kling can. On paper, Kling 3.0 as a Sora alternative matches Sora 2’s 15-second takes in one pass, adds native 4K and up to six shots per prompt, and keeps optional native audio. Sora’s cameos and social remix feed have no Kling equivalent. We never ran side-by-side tests, so we don’t claim a winner on looks.
06Can I move my Sora videos and prompts to a Sora alternative?
Videos, no — a Sora library can’t be imported anywhere. Download your files through OpenAI’s export page while it is available; a downloaded frame can then start a new clip in image to video. Prompts, mostly yes: the converter on this page rewrites them into timed shots, moves sound to the end and flags lengths over 15 seconds.
07Does anything replace Sora Cameos?
Not directly. No Sora alternative here has a cameo system or social casting. Image to video can start a clip from a photo of a person, and Kling O1 — coming soon here — keeps a character consistent from reference images. Either way, only use photos of people who have given you explicit permission, and never of public figures.
08Can I make Sora videos on PictureToVideo?
No. Sora is shut down, and we never offered it. Every clip here comes from a Sora alternative we can actually call — Kling, Veo 3.1, Wan 2.5, Hailuo 02 or Grok Imagine. Each result is labelled with its quality tier, and the model behind every tier is listed on our models page. Seedance 2.5 is coming soon and stays greyed out until it is switched on.
09How do Sora alternative prices compare with Sora’s?
Sora 2’s API was listed at $0.10 per second at 720p before it closed. Kling 3.0’s API list price is $0.070 per second at 720p without audio. On PictureToVideo a 12-second Kling 3.0 clip with audio costs 168 credits, roughly $2.28 on the Pro plan, and Wan 2.5 starts at 9 credits per second at 720p.
10Is PictureToVideo affiliated with OpenAI, Kling or Google?
No. PictureToVideo is an independent, unofficial studio — an OpenAI Sora alternative, not a partner — that runs Kling, Veo, Wan, Hailuo and Grok Imagine models through their APIs. We have no relationship with OpenAI and are not endorsed by Kuaishou, Kling AI or Google; product names are used only to describe the comparison.
